It was inspired by John Hughes, and Thirtysomething. They called off the marriage at the altar, expressing a lack of being ready (just prior to Jason Priestley's departure from the series). Following the stroke, the Martins' marriage deteriorates to the point where John asks for a separation from Felice, but he reconsiders after talking with Noah at Donna's request.
