Tornadoes that form in a squall line are often weaker, short-lived tornadoes that spin-up quickly and are hard to detect on radar. On rare occasions stronger tornadoes of EF-3 intensity have occurred. Squall lines are typically hundreds of miles long but only 10 20 miles wide. Dramatic looking shelf clouds tend to form along the leading edge of a squall line.
